General Summary

Vertex is currently seeking a Contract Research Scientist with a strong background in hydrogen deuterium exchange (HDX), native or structural mass spectrometry (MS) to join our multidisciplinary mechanistic MS team.

This 15 month position presents a unique opportunity to work at the cutting edge of drug discovery, developing and applying innovative structural MS approaches to answer key questions about mechanistic biology and compound-target interactions. Research Scientists in the mechanistic MS team work at the interface of multiple disciplines - chemistry, cellular biology, structural biology and biophysics. We are imbedded in wider diseases teams in order to have impact across all stages of the drug discovery pipeline

Candidates will have a broad background in MS and previous experience developing methods or approaches in HDX, native MS, structural/mechanistic MS or using MS to understand small molecule target interactions. Candidates will be able to create innovative, goal-focused experiments in a resourceful, self-sufficient manner, then execute them at pace with the support of larger teams. Excellent communications skills, strong teamwork and an ability to adapt to rapidly changing priorities are essential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, optimize and run structural MS experiments
  • Collate and interpret complex data and synthesize results into conclusions or recommendations
  • Perform experimental troubleshooting
  • Identify relevant emerging technologies to advance existing technology platforms and create/maintain a competitive advantage
  • Prepare and present experimental conclusions at internal Group/Department or Project Team research meetings
  • Work closely with colleagues to prioritise and schedule experiments
  • Capture and record experimental outcomes for project updates and compliance needs
  • Contribute to patent and/or publication preparation

  • Knowledge and Skills
  • Practical experience of using HDX or structural MS approaches
  • Desire to push boundaries and develop new methods using HDX and structural MS to solve challenging problems relevant to drug discovery
  • Experience with native mass spectrometry for characterisation of proteins, nucleotides, biotherapeutics or ligand interactions
  • Strong team player, comfortable working at the interface of multiple disciplines
  • Ability to contextualise own experimental work within higher level project goals
  • Show deep understanding of own discipline and the relevant, contemporary academic literature
  • Excellent communication and time management skills

  • Education and Experience:
  • Ph.D. or equivalent industry experience
  • Outstanding communication and team working skills
  • Practical experience working with a variety of MS systems
