Job Description

The Integrative Biology department is dedicated to the discovery of novel and effective medicines. This department comprises several complementary functions focused on identifying new targets and progressing a small molecule portfolio.

The High Throughput Biology group leads the discovery of novel medicines from identification of small molecules HITS to delivery of candidates into development. This includes building human disease-relevant assays, identifying and validating small molecule HITS from HTS campaigns, turning validated HITS into physiologically relevant leads and identifying mechanism of action for multiple targets.

We are currently seeking a self-motivated and enthusiastic high throughput lab scientist with a proven track record of developing and deploying innovative biochemical, enzymatic and/or biophysical in vitro assays across multiple targets (protein, enzyme, RNA) to join the Molecular Mechanism team. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, be a motivational team player and enjoy working with multidisciplinary teams to identify medicines of the future.

The candidate will have a passion for high throughput biology bringing their own discovery ideas to the discussion and prosecuting targets by independently developing miniaturised screening assays, running high throughput screens using automation, and characterizing small molecule mechanism-of-action. This newly formed team will need you to contribute to its future direction.

This role will report to the team leader of Molecular Mechanism and be part of the High Throughput Biology Group at our research site in Oxford.

Key requirements:
  • A background in biochemistry (or a related discipline) with discovery experience gained from pharma, biotech, CRO or academic screening center
  • A broad range of in vitro assay techniques and latest state-of-the-art equipment for screening and characterising small molecules targeting proteins, enzymes and RNA targets
  • Assay development and optimisation suitable for high throughput screening
  • Laboratory experience working in miniaturised assay formats (to 1,536) and using automation (HiRES, Cellario…) to screen at scale, alongside a working knowledge of the assay statistics used to control screening quality
  • Familiarity with screening data, appropriate quality control statistics and analysis tools (e.g. Genedata, Spotfire, Vortex…)
  • Evidence of identifying validated HITS and progressing them through LO
  • Problem solving abilities demonstrated through technical innovations on existing research methodology
  • Adaptability to new scientific areas and ability to learn new techniques quickly
  • A successful track record of bringing new technologies to small molecule to screening; previous experience of developing an innovative approach in science
  • Ability to critically read and review literature to bring forward new ideas
  • An interest in data science
  • Ability to clearly articulate complex concepts at all levels of the organization, and to logically connect different disciplines
  • Thorough understanding of the drug discovery process
  • Strong interpersonal skills and enthusiasm to work within and across teams
  • Excellent levels of integrity and adherence to protocols and safety procedures.

At Vertex, we bring together the brightest minds in the relentless pursuit of creating transformative medicines for people with serious and life-threatening diseases. Founded in 1989 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, we are one of only a handful of biotechnology companies founded since 1976 that has discovered and developed four or more approved medicines in our own labs. In addition to the four medicines we’ve developed to treat the underlying cause of cystic fibrosis, we have ongoing research programs focused on the underlying ...
