Description

Why Become a Contributor?

Technical writing is a great way to solidify your knowledge of a topic and share it with the community. As an author for Baeldung, you’ll work with a team of authors and editors that will provide guidance and feedback on your articles and code. Our publishing process will help you improve your skills both as a technical writer and developer.

Another benefit is the opportunity to engage with other Computer Scientists and build your reputation. We always promote all the articles through the newsletters and through social media to make sure they’re actually being discovered.

And, last but not least, this can be a good way to earn some side income. Many of our authors use the platform as an opportunity to learn and research new technologies while getting paid.

Budgets

The budget for each article is based on your author level and the number of words.

Here are some typical budgets used by authors:

  • Level 14 – 1000 words    – 88$
  • Level 14 – 1250 words    – 93$
  • Level 18 – 1000 words   –  96$
  • Level 18 – 1250 words    – 100$

The level is based on the feedback from your editors on 3 metrics: writing, technical, and communication. When you start, you’ll be at level 1, then you’ll progress as you improve (the max level is 22).

Basically, the better the quality of your writeups, the higher the payment will be.

Here’s the full list of budget levels on the site, if you’re curious.

And we generally handle payments via PayPal.

Guidelines and Publishing Process

Our writing guidelines are important to ensure a good quality of the article, as well as consistency across articles. Here are the formatting, code, and writing guidelines we use:

The publishing process starts with you choosing a topic to work on (we have a list of open topics you can choose from or you can suggest your own). You’ll then work with an editor to create an outline and provide a draft and supporting code.

Simply put, the editor will help you get your articles over the finish line. They’re going to do reviews, offer guidance with technical and language feedback, and generally be helpful. You can read more about our editorial team here.

Once the article is ready, we hit publish.

As for how quickly you’d like to write – that’s fully up to you. For example, we have great authors publishing one article each week, and we have authors publishing an article every month or so.

Finally, an important note: the content you write cannot be plagiarized from other sources, nor can the articles be re-published on other sites.

Attribution

Here are the ways you can publish on the site:
  • As a paid author, publishing under the generic baeldung user
  • As a paid author, publishing under your own name (once you go over Level 12 on the platform)
  • Directly under your own name, as an unpaid author
Most authors choose a paid engagement. And, if you’re curious – here’s our list of authors.

Requirements

Requirements for Applying

First – you naturally need to have a CS background to base your work on, preferably with teaching or research or machine learning, with at least two years of teaching or CS-related projects.

The content we publish is focused on explaining core Computer Science concepts.

Second, while the articles aren’t focused on any particular language, they can be code-centric, so being in the trenches and able to code is instrumental. We also use LateX to publish our CS articles, so experience with it is considered a plus.

Good command of the English language is also important.
